Family Tragedy Brings Warning About Pool Safety

Almost a year ago, 3-year-old Ava Grace Hart drowned in a Collierville pool. Now her family is sharing their story, hoping to prevent this tragedy from happening to any other child.
COLLIERVILLE, TN (localmemphis.com) - "There are a lot of more kids in the pool than just your child, so it's safest if you keep an eye on them too," said YMCA lifeguard Adrienne Lewis.

With school out for the summer, hundreds of kids will jump in pools to cool off. YMCA lifeguards say parents need to be aware of safety tips to prevent your child from drowning.

"Yes, we are lifeguards, but only one set of eyes is not good enough for a child. There needs to be multiple sets," said YMCA lifeguard Emeri Houston.

Almost a year ago, 3-year-old Ava Grace Hart drowned in a Collierville pool. Now her family is sharing their story, hoping to prevent this tragedy from happening to any other child.

"The number one thing that I really want to stress to families is that if you are not vigilantly, adamantly, watching your kid with all of your attention and actively participating in their swimming and joining the pool, then it's very likely you'll be on your hands and elbows with your face on the floor of Le Bonheur [Children's Hospital] in a pool full of tears, praying, begging God for a miracle in a situation that could have been avoided," said Eric Hart, who is the uncle of Ava Grace Hart.

Statistics reveal that children ages 1-4 have the highest drowning rates. YMCA's Mike Cunningham says there are many ways to keep your children safe around the water.

"Stay alert, no rough-housing, don't go in water that you know is over your head, bring flotation devices. It's all common sense. Things that will keep you safe in the water," he said.

Hart added, "Put distractions aside. Whether it's people around or whether it's your phone, whatever distractions might be around you. Put those aside. Put your priorities where they matter, on the children."
