MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - An early Monday morning fire in Shelby County has left two families homeless.

The fire broke out just before 2:30 a.m. in the 4700-block of Waterfront Oak Drive. That's an area of unincorporated Shelby County just north of Memphis city limits.

Firefighters say three people lived there, but thankfully no one was inside at the time of the fire. However, the flames did spread to a home next door, forcing out a family of six.

No family members were injured, but two firefighters had to be checked out after a "flash-over" explosion from the front and back doors took place at one of the homes. They were treated on the scene and went back to fighting the fire.

A family dog died on the scene, likely from smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
