Firefighters Check on Residents Door-to-Door as Heat Persists

No air conditioning and no relief from the heat is the reality for too many homes in the Mid-South. Memphis firefighters were trying to find a solution as they went door-to-door across the city offering relief and hope.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - No air conditioning and no relief from the heat isthe reality for too many homes in the Mid-South. Memphis firefighters were trying to find a solution as they went door-to-door across the city offering relief and hope.

According to Memphis Fire Battalion Chief Cordell Cooper, firefighters knocked on door after door looking for "the elderly and invalid, and really anybody that needs our assistance," he said.

By 9 a.m. temperatures outside had already pushed 90 degrees. These guys know temperatures can rise higher inside homes without A/C.

Cooper said, "If they need assistance we have a contact number for them to get transportation to the cooling centers, if it's some issue they need, smoke detector, whatever else, we try to help them out."

Firefighters knocked on Leman Walker's door offering help, asking if he had working air conditioning. Luckily he already has a working A/C unit, but he's grateful to see firefighters fighting heat a different way.

"So many people dying from the heat, for Memphis and the fire department, it makes me feel very glad, very grateful, very thankful."
