Fireworks Stores Packed Ahead of July 4th Holiday

SOUTHAVEN, MS (localmemphis.com) - Barbeque, family and friends, and of course fireworks, are all makings of 4th of July celebrations. Fireworks stores in north Mississippi were packed Wednesday with people getting ready for the holiday.

Lines have been out the door at the only fireworks store in Southaven, which means the sky's bound to be bright for Independence Day in Mississippi.

When it comes to fireworks everyone's got a favorite, and they're flying off the shelves. But where you can shoot fireworks varies from town to town.

It's legal to shoot fireworks in Horn Lake for the 4th, but illegal within the city limits of Southaven and Olive Branch. That's not stopping residents from celebrating.

"That's kind of messed up, but we still do it. Break the law, that's okay. We going to sneak into it!" said India Smith.

For more than 30 years Tammy Downs has been selling fireworks, and she has a theory on why folks keep coming back.

"It's a fun happy experience, I love selling them, I love being here and working every season, and i couldn't imagine doing anything else."

Another reason for the booming sales, according to Downs, is because fireworks symbolize freedom.

"I think fireworks are a symbol for freedom for our country. It's something that makes people happy."

It's also important to be safe when using fireworks, so make sure to keep water nearby in case of a fire.
