BARTLETT, TN (abc24.com) - Serra Chevrolet has finished construction on the first solar-powered car charging station. In 2011, more than 500 Green Zone installations are planned for Chevrolet dealerships across North America, with Serra Chevrolet being the first in the State of Tennessee.

The state-of-the-art system was designed and developed especially for General Motors by Sunlogics, a global leader in solar technology.

"We're making the Green Zone available to our customers and the community to use for their personal vehicle. In other words, we'll provide a charge free of charge," Joe Serra, President of Serra Automotive, told abc24.com.

According to information released by Sunlogics, a 12-space, Green Zone 20kW canopy will produce up to 36,000 kW hours per year and has the capacity to deliver approximately 4,500 charges.

The Green Zone Solar Canopy is located on the east side of Serra Chevrolet's main facility.
