Memphis, TN (abc24.com) - The holidays are coming early for Memphis Light, Gas, and Water employees, after the utility company's board voted to hand out year-end bonuses on Thursday afternoon.

Under the plan, full-time employees will receive $750, and part-time employees will net $200.

"A $750 bonus? Wow." said Yolanda Johnson as she paid her water bill on Thursday evening.

The bonuses come a week after MLGW president asked the City Council to approve a 5 percent water rate hike and a 1 percent increase in salary. The council soundly rejected both notions.

The utility company says the raises would have cost about $1.6 million a year, while the bonuses will cost $2 million, just this year.

"It cost more immediately, but far less in the long term." said Jerry Collins, MLGW President & CEO.

Collins says MLGW will present a new budget to city council next Tuesday, one that doesn’t include a water rate hike or raises.

Collins says without the hike, the water division could lose up to $2 million next year.

Both the City of Memphis and Shelby County voted to give their employees bonuses.

Meanwhile, those bonus checks head out to employees next Friday.

What's even more amazing is how we, the citizens of Memphis keep letting them render us as stupid. I guess no one but me find it extremely strange that the County, the City, and now MLGW all of a sudden found enough money to give their employees an end of year bonus equaling exactly the same amount as what started out with the county bonuses. I guess we should all feel grateful they only found enough to give $750.00 (payola I think it's called). Even Mayor Herenton didn't pull one of these on us!

MLGW should be sold to a private outfit. Most govt. operations could and should be privatized, including fire departments.

Guess GMA22 is either an ostrich or a tax feeder. None of your silly examples applies to me, but still I am forced to pay for it at gunpoint. What say you, parasite?

While I don't begrudge these employees a bonus, $750 is pretty darned high. I'm sure they really are happy to see this extra check but, based on my own experience, I'm sure they're rather see a raise. As to a water fee increase, MLGW needs to show us, their customers, why an increase would be needed and why they'll loose $2 million if there's not one. What about that huge increase we had this year for both water and sewage?

Well kiddies, the mundane, are not cleaning up your poop and making your toilets and garbage disposals and all the other sewage keep from backing up, they aren't picking up your garbage, hauling away your crap because you are too lazy to take it to the dump and kiddies those same mundane folks aren't climbing in windows to rescue you kiddies when your mom and dad fall asleep smoking and set the house on fire, neither do these mundane folks show up at your house when mom and dad get in a fight and he pulls a gun and shoots you all! Let's see, these mundane folks didn't take a 4.6% pay cut either. So all in all kids, the employees getting the raises aren't really getting raises, they are getting a drop in the bucket of the money the city took away from them illegally in the first place!!!!!!

Remember kids, MLGW is a government entity, and that in addition to that, late in the story it mentions that both Memphis and Shelby County are giving monetary bonuses to their employees. Paid for by your tax dollars, while the mere mundanes that are the tax cattle are tightening their belts to make ends meet. Government - it's amazing what they can spend money on, when it's other people's money....
