MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A former Shelby County Sheriff's deputy faced his second DUI arrest in five weeks.

42-year-old William Speight was arrested March 25 in Bartlett on US 70 and Memphis-Arlington Road.

Speight faces several charges, including DUI, Public Intoxication and Reckless Driving. Cops say he refused to take a sobriety test at the scene of a car accident. Deputies say Speight had slurred speech and failed a field sobriety test.

This is his second DUI arrest; he was arrested Feb. 20 on Berryhill Road in Cordova.

At the time he worked as a patrolman in the Shelby County Sheriff Office's Homeland Security Unit. He was off duty when he was arrested but was driving his department vehicle.

In this latest arrest investigators believe the vehicle Speight was driving rear-ended a second vehicle. Cops said Speight had slurred speech, and sounded confused when he spoke.

Speight has since been released from jail on $1,000 bond. He returns to court in May.

When he was arrested in February, Speight was suspended with pay from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office pending the results of an internal investigation. He resigned at the end of February.
