Memphis, TN (abc24.com)-Four people were arrested early Saturday morning after they attacked an off-duty Memphis police officer outside Club Crave on Beale Street.

According to the police affidavit, officer Anthony Campbell was leaving Beale Street with some friends when he noticed four people fighting in a car outside.

Witnesses told police Campbell stopped to see what was going on inside the car, when the suspects started yelling obscenities at him.

One of Campbell's friends told the suspects they were talking to a police officer.

Campbell said he tried walking away because he wanted to avoid confrontation. The suspects then yelled “Get that police (expletive)” and ran after him. They knocked him to the ground and proceeded to punch and kick him repeatedly.

Campbell didn't suffer any major injuries, just a swollen eye and a cut on his nose.

De Angelo Watkins and Sirita Tolbert, both 28-years-old, and Justin Boone and Roderick Jenkins, both 24-years-old, were each charged with simple assault.

Officers reported Tolbert was also charged with forgery, when they found a counterfeit $100 bill in her purse.

Tolbert posted $3,000 bond and was released. Watkins, Boone, and Jenkins each posted $100 bond, and were also released on Saturday.

All four are expected to be in court Monday morning.

Words to the wise - If you are walking around with counterfeit money in your purse, you just might want to avoid confrontations with the police. And I think the charge should have been much more than simple assault. Now, the message is, attack policemen and get a slap on the wrist and pay $100 bail.

Why we tolerate these numbnuts is beyond me. Isn't the max for simple assault a year in jail? See how they like that.
