Frayser Man Accused of Being a 'Romeo Pimp'

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - A Frayser man is behind bars on kidnapping and sex trafficking charges. Investigators say Willie Travis Griggs, also known as "Willie Brown," forced a woman into prostitution. He's being called a "Romeo Pimp." Griggs' landlord says he was clean-cut, polite, and acted normal, and had no idea his tenant would be accused of kidnapping and pimping women.

"I'm very shocked, very shocked," said Griggs' landlord, Richard Riddle.

Willie Travis Griggs, 34, rented a Frayser home from Riddle in the 800-block of Whitney. The arrest came as a shock to Griggs' landlord.

"I never had any issues with any of my tenants. Nothing like this," said Riddle. "He's well spoken, clean cut, and drove a nice car."

Kelley Alsobrook, an advocate against human trafficking, believes Griggs may have been what you call a "Romeo Pimp."

"The Romeo pimp says 'Oh, I just love you, I want you,' this and that, and once she's hooked he'll say, 'Hey, I have a friend, we're trying to get some money together, if you would do this with this friend…' and that's how it starts," said Alsobrook, also a former sex slave. "They're master manipulators."

Memphis Police say Griggs met a 22-year-old woman on Monday. She stayed in his home for a few days. When she tried to leave on Wednesday, police say Griggs became angry and yelled "You belong to me now!"

When officers arrested Griggs they found on his computer where he posted ads advertising sex for sale on the website backpage.com. Griggs' landlord thought the young woman was his girlfriend.

"She was left high and dry is exactly what she said," stated Riddle.

Alsobrook has made it her mission to help women avoid the dangers of human sex trafficking.

"Educating, educating, educating, doing something for these young ladies to build their self esteem," she said.

Travis Griggs remains in jail on a $75,000 bond. He's expected to be arraigned on Monday, June 10.
