MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - A Frayser man is behind bars, accused of brewing moonshine and illegally selling it. Police say he admitted to the whole thing.

People living near Creston Avenue in Frayser had no idea one of their neighbors was making moonshine.

38-year-old Charles "Chuck" Materna was just arrested after police say they found an illegal still in his garage.

"I thought they only did it out there in the country; I didn't know they were doing it here in Memphis," said neighbor Doug Lamont.

Officers say they found two tubs filled with 30 gallons of mash and more than 10 gallons of finished corn whiskey. Materna had everything needed to make the liquor: a cooker, coils, funnels, filters and more.

It's illegal in Tennessee to make more than three gallons and to sell the stuff. Officers say Materna admitted to selling his concoction in Arkansas.

Lamont said of Materna, "I see him once a week. He comes down here and mows the yard for some of the people who don't have lawn mowers - real nice guy."

Police don't see him that way. They also found a marijuana plant and illegal prescription pills.

Materna was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of More than 3 Gallons of Unstamped Alcoholic Beverages, Possession of a Still, and Possession of Marijuana. He was booked at the Shelby County Jail on a $30,000 bond.
