Governor Signs Gang Crime Bill to Law at Memphis CJC

Governor Bill Haslam was in town Wednesday to sign a new anti-gang bill into law.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Governor Bill Haslam was in town Wednesday to sign a new anti-gang bill into law.

Haslam says the law gives prosecutors more tools to prosecute gang members.

Specifically, it provides stiffer sentences if prosecutors can prove a crime was committed as part of gang activity.

"The statistics show that there is two times as many gang members in Tennessee as there are law enforcement, but this law will give some very specific remedies that will make it easier for prosecutors to go after gang-related crimes," he said.

Haslam signed the bill at 201 Poplar; he's the first governor to sign a crime bill into law at the Shelby County Criminal Justice Complex.

The law goes into effect on Monday, July 1.
