Grizz Fans Rally for Coach Hollins at Tom Lee Park

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Grizzlies fans packed Tom Lee Park, rallying to keep Coach Lionel Hollins. His contract with the Grizz expires June 30, but despite a franchise record 56 wins and an appearance in the NBA's Western Conference finals, his status is in doubt.

"Rallying behind Coach Hollins just letting him know that we love him," said rally organizer Daniel Dewitt.

Decked out in their Grizz gear, fans yelled chants and waved posters, hoping to send a message to Grizzlies owner Robert Pera.

"He has a winning record. More than that to me is his passion and his commitment to this team. I've heard player after player say they don't want to play for anybody else but this coach and so it says to me he has really built a good relationship with his team," said Grizzlies fan Aurelia Kyles.

Hollins led the Grizzlies to a 56-26 record and the Western Conference Finals. Grizzlies fans say this coach is important both on and off the court.

Marron Thomas is part of the Leadership Empowerment Center, an organization to which Coach Hollins donates his time.

"You have kids that have a superstar coach to come out to them to impact their lives. Kids don't get the opportunity to see that and have that like they have with Coach Hollins because he's real," said Thomas.

"Coach Hollins is bigger than basketball. I mean the basketball record of course speaks for itself. We're all proud we made it to the finals. 1 of 4 teams but he's a true role model. A family man. From an African American perspective to see a man, his wife, his three kids and family doing well. They went to school here. One is in medical school. You can't ask for a better role model for the community," said Grizzlies fan Michael Cunningham.
