Group Seeks to Move Downtown Columbus Statue to East Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - The statue of the man many believed founded America is awfully hard to find in Memphis.

Christopher Columbus has his own park, and his statue sits directly across the street from the old Shelby County Courthouse on Adams Street. The only people who seem to be familiar with it are the homeless who sleep there.

A group of local Italian Americans wants to change that and move the statue to the east Memphis park where the annual Italian Fest is held.

The statue and park were dedicated in 1987; both were soon forgotten.

Then the group UNICO, an Italian American foundation, was looking for a project where its members could help fix up Memphis.

"So we were looking around at the parks and we went to look at Columbus Park and realized the park was terrible. Bushes were overgrown, the trees were down and trash everywhere. So we made it our initiative every year to clean up the park," said Mike Spano, President of the UNICO Memphis Foundation.

What was happening at Columbus Park was bugging the heck out of Mike Spano, which is why he wants to move the statue to Marquette Park in east Memphis where the Italian Festival is held every year.

Memphis City Council members like the idea, as long as the city doesn't have to pay for anything.

"They're not going to fund it. We would have to fund it, so what we would probably have to do is a fundraiser through our foundation, and we have some business connections in town. Maybe see if we could get somebody with a lift to transport the statue," said Spano.

They would also like to change the name of Marquette Park to Columbus Park. The move would cost about $8,000, according to their studies, but it will all be a private job - no taxpayer money will be involved.
