Gun Injuries on the Rise among Mid-South Children

According to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, doctors say the largest increase is in kids between the ages of 10 and 14; the majority of those are African American boys.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - More and more children in the Mid-South are being injured by guns.

According to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, doctors say the largest increase is in kids between the ages of 10 and 14; the majority of those are African American boys.

Doctors say they see more than 40 kids with gun shot wounds every year.

According to Susan Helms with Le Bonheur, "Since 2003 to 2011 we've received about 42 victims every year because of a gun shot wound and there have been 12 deaths in that time. The majority have been male."

Hospital officials say parents need to lock up their guns and ammunition separately to help protect their children.
