Gunfire Erupts At Club Crave Victim's Funeral

There is worry there could be more violence after the funeral for a man murdered outside a notorious Beale Street Nightclub is sprayed with gunfire.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - There is worry there could be more violence after the funeral for a man murdered outside a notorious Beale Street Nightclub is sprayed with gunfire.

Randy Williams was shot and killed outside Club Crave in the early morning hours of Christmas Eve.

On Sunday, friends and family gathered to say goodbye to the 24-year-old at Promise Land Church in Frayser.

Witnesses say as they were leaving the funeral to head to the cemetery, gunfire erupted around 1:30 p.m.

"The shooting started up there and I ran to the door," said Roy Shirley, who works next to the church.

"Sounded like a 40 or a 45 and as fast as he could pull the trigger, boom, boom, boom...about 5 times," he added.

Shirley says the next thing he knew, he saw a man running from the scene, followed by a group of mourners.

"A tall guy come running down the driveway and he is running towards Mapco, and a little while after that, about 200 people come running down here going down to Mapco," Shirley added.

A police spokeswoman said two were detained at the scene. One, a 17-year-old, was charged with unlawful possession of a gun. Investigators say the teen's gun didn't match bullet casings found at the scene.

"We are definitely praying for the family, keeping the family in our prayers. We are also praying for the people who may have been involved in the situation," said Marco Woods, with Promise Land Church.

"It is one of those situations, one of those situations, thank god we had a trained staff to take care of the situation," Woods said.

"The juvenile was in possession of a Smith and Wesson handgun, but due to the fact that the caliber gun he had in his possession did not match the rounds found on the scene, officers were unable to determine if he actually shot his weapon," the MPD spokesperson said in an e-mail.

Terrell Miller, 23, was issued a misdemeanor citation, after police witnessed him kicking the 17-year-old.

No one was injured.

The murder of Randy Williams remains unsolved. If you have information, you're asked to Memphis Police at 528-CASH.
