BROWNSVILLE, TN (abc24.com) - The principal of a West Tennessee high school, accused of making derogatory remarks about homosexuality and teen pregnancy before the student body, resigned from her position Thursday.
According to the Haywood County Board of Education, Dorothy Bond submitted her resignation as principal of Haywood High School on March 1.
In a prepared statement, the school district said, "The Haywood County Board of Education acknowledges its student body’s right to free speech. Further, the Haywood County Board of Education strives to provide an atmosphere of tolerance and diversity while maintaining high academic standards."
The ACLU sent a letter to Superintendent Marlon King after students contacted the group saying a high school principal had threatened to expel gay students who showed affection for someone of the same sex.
According to a news release from the ACLU, Haywood High School Principal Dorothy Bond also said that gay students were "not on God's path" and were "ruining their lives." Students and parents told abc24.com she also stated that if a student got pregnant, their lives were over.
The ACLU says Bond also has incorporated prayers and proselytizing into school events. And it says she once told a lesbian student that she would go to hell.
