COVINGTON, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - Searchers have recovered the body of a man who drowned while swimming in the Mississippi River upstream from Memphis.

Tipton County Sheriff J.T. "Pancho" Chumley said the victim was identified as 28-year-old Ricky Eugene Free of Henning, TN.

Deputies say he was swimming with two friends on Thursday north of Duvall Landing. Free had tried to swim to a sandbar when he got into trouble. His friends tried to help, but were unable to reach him and called for help just before 6 p.m.

Rescue crews recovered Free and pronounced him dead on the scene.

How could anybody swim in that sewer? Much less put even a toe in that toxic sludge. Chlordane, dioxin, benzene, nitrates, pesticides, herbicides, you name it and it is in that water. Farm activities and fertilizers are the source of the nitrates and the dead zone in the gulf. The rest is from industry. The chemical companies and refineries do not line the banks of the river for the view.
