Hurricane Elvis Remembered 10 Years Later

Hurricane Elvis left death and destruction throughout the Mid-South on July 22, 2003.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - It disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared. Hurricane Elvis left death and destruction throughout the Mid-South on July 22, 2003.

"It happened so quickly," said Midtown resident Joe Spake about the storm. He was asleep inside his home when the storm hit. "I heard a little debris hitting the house. It sounded like the typical storm."

Spake says once he went outside he realized the storm was anything but typical. "It was worse than what I anticipated," he said.

In a matter of minutes power lines were knocked down and trees were uprooted. Seven people died as a result of the storm. More than 750,000 households were without electricity, including the Spake family.

"For a few days we could sleep here and do cooking but mostly we had to camp at other people's homes for a few days."

Spake says even though it's been ten years, memories of the destruction Hurricane Elvis caused will never be forgotten.
