Is Coach Pastner Leaving Memphis? Fans React to Rumors

His name is in the mix as other schools look for new coaches. Everyone is talking, from Tiger Nation to national commentators.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Just two days after the Tigers' basketball season ended, the rumors are flying. Is Coach Josh Pastner leaving Memphis?

His name is in the mix as other schools look for new coaches. Everyone is talking, from Tiger Nation to national commentators.

Fans want him to stay.

There's a Facebook page just created called "Support Memphis Coach Josh Pastner." Early Monday morning it had about 300 fans. Now it's up to over 2,000.

Fans are sending a message, but the U of M is refusing to let Pastner talk to the media right now.

"I've heard USC is actually trying to woo him away from the U of M," says fan David Walker.

"Not surprising is it?" adds Ken Goree

Memphis fans' reactions isn't surprising either. "We need to keep Coach Pastner here," Walker says.

"He knows the guys, knows what's going on," says Mitch Platz. "If he stayed here it would be a better choice."

"They want to keep him surely," Goree says. "He's been great, although the last game wouldn't be a good recommendation."

With 106 wins and 34 losses in his four years as head coach, Pastner's the winningest in the U of M's history.

Fans love that. They also just like him.

"He's a good guy. Good coach. Just a decent person to look up to, we need him here," says Walker.

If he left, "students would probably be pretty upset about it," adds Tenesha McNeil.

That's what Memphians have to say about hearing talk of him leaving. As for the man himself? This is what he told abc24.com Saturday night: "My only focus is Memphis Tiger basketball."

There's a lot on the line with next year's move to the Big East. Memphis also has a star recruiting class, ranked second in the nation.

According to Pastner, "We have a chance to be really, really good next year with the returning guys plus the recruiting class. The future looks bright."

Pastner just finished the second year of his five year contract. He makes $1.7 million. No word yet if the school is working on extending his contract.
