Lack Of Construction Leaves Memphis With Only One Welcome Center

MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Once you drive under the warm and inviting “Welcome Center Closed” signs on I-55 you'll see it.

A rusted piece of artwork in a field where weeds are choking the life out of the dead zone.

If you can find your way to downtown Memphis, there is a welcome center there. It's for Interstate 40, but it's the only one Memphis has these days.

“Oh yeah, I love them,” Andy Soto of Pennsylvania said.

At the I-55 welcome center, the only information available here is what could be.

A permit stapled to a post about new construction. Only trouble is, there is no new construction.

For Terry and Sharon Johnson of Florida, stopping at welcome centers is a habit that they have no intention of breaking.

They said they use it for maps, hotel coupons, and for information on what's going on locally.

The I-55 center was supposed to be ready by the end of the year, but Tennessee Department of Transportation officials say all the bids to build were over budget. So the entire process must now start from scratch.

Too bad for Lee Curry of Charlotte, North Carolina.

“Well we stop every time we enter a state. We usually stop momentarily if for nothing else but to pick up a current road map,” Curry said.
