Lichterman Nature Center Readies for Scarecrow Contest

Registration is now open for the 2013 Lichterman Scarecrow Contest.
MEMPHIS, TN ( - When you think scarecrows, you likely think of The Wizard of Oz, Halloween and the promise of cooler weather, right? Well, not today.

The Lichterman Nature Center is now accepting applications for its annual scarecrow contest.

Andy Williams, the center’s manager, says, “They’re amazing, we have Dr. Seuss characters, we have animals, storybook characters; the imagination the participants show has blown us all away.”

Williams says they’ve got room for 40 entries who all abide by the same set of rules.

“There are two basic criteria. One, that people use a standardized frame. We have a safe way to anchor them, plus it gives us an even playing field for people's creations. The other is that they need to be family-friendly things.”

Once registered, get working on your ideas and know they will be seen.

Williams says, “All the scarecrows are displayed around our special events lawn, which is handicap accessible, so no matter the weather or your physical capabilities, you can come enjoy scarecrows on the sidewalk.”

Frames will be available for pick up at the Lichterman after July 16th. If you’re interested in registering the current fee is $25, it goes up to $30 after June 30th. Prizes are given for most creative, best critter, best school entry, greenest and most popular. The scarecrows stay on display through mid-November.
