Life Saver On Wheels Canvases Mid-South

Call it a life-saver on wheels. Baptist Women's Health Center's mobile mammography unit is the only one of it's kind in the Mid-South.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Call it a life-saver on wheels. Baptist Women's Health Center's mobile mammography unit is the only one of it's kind in the Mid-South.

One thing is for sure. When you see it, you certainly can't miss it. This bright pink bus no doubt sends a message. A message that hits close to home for Beverly Taylor.

“It's very important to me now that I stay on top of my screening,” patient Beverly Taylor said.

It was just last year Taylor had the scare of her life. A routine breast exam discovered a lump.

“I couldn't believe it. It seemed so unreal to me that i would have breast cancer because it never crossed my mind,” Taylor said.

Thankfully.. It turned out to be non-cancerous. But that close call reminded her of the importance of getting an annual mammogram.

And that's where Baptist Health Center's mobile mammography unit comes in.

Taylor, like plenty of women throughout the mid-south are taking advantage of health care literally provided for their convenience.

“We have the same screening service that's available in house out in the community to make health care more accessible to women,” said Mandy Payne from Baptist Women’s Health Center.

Payne said the mobile unit canvasses the city, traveling to different businesses, community centers and events.

The idea is to make getting mammograms easier.

“We know how busy women can be in their lives. They usually take care of their spouses and their kids before they take care of themselves. So we want to make sure they do take care of themselves,” Payne said.

Taylor for one realizes the importance..

“I’m making it my absolute focus to stay on top of this because now I know there's the potential there,” Taylor said.

But the services provided on this bus have another potential. The potential to save lives.
