Lifeblood's Donor Fest Kicks Off Saturday

Sponsors of Donor Fest are hoping to see more folks stepping up to the plate with the promotion of Saturday's celebration.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Roll up your sleeve and give the gift of life. There's no time like the present: it's World Blood Donor Day.

Sponsors of Donor Fest are hoping to see more folks stepping up to the plate with the promotion of Saturday's celebration.

Longtime donor Melanie Harrison prepares for the festival by saving a life with her own blood donation.

"It's important because maybe on an average day they may not get as much blood as they need, so if they try to promote it in the community and you know do great things say having a donor fest, that might encourage people that don't normally give to give, "said Harrison.

The CEO of LifeBlood says the week long promotion for blood donation that accompanies Donor Fest is also meant to shine a spotlight on those who donate blood regularly.

Susan Berry-Buckley said, "First of all it's to thank all the donors we have already given for their generous donations, and second of all it's to educate the public to try and get them to donate blood."

Summer is always a challenging time for blood centers as vacation schedules impact the number of donors. Donor Fest is meant to help boost the low number of blood donations that tend to come with the season, donations that could make the difference between life and death.

"We had a young man that was in an accident and lost his leg and without the many blood transfusions he had he would not have made it and now he's an active young boy playing basketball with a prosthetic," said Berry-Buckley.

Lifeblood's Donor Fest will take place Saturday at Audubon Park from 11 am to 2 pm.
