MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - There is a new heart treatment that is saving lives at Baptist Hospitals in Memphis and Southaven. Alan Tatum with Baptist Memorial Hospital DeSoto joins Local 24 Midday with more on treating atrial fibrillation and how their procedure works.

Atrial fibrillation occurs when the heart's valves quiver instead of pumping effectively, causing blood to pool and increasing the risk of stroke.

More than 20 percent of strokes are caused by this disease, according to the American Heart Association. And the strokes are usually more debilitating due to the larger size of the clots.

The new procedure, called "convergence," is minimally invasive and eliminates the need for open-heart surgery.

For more information about this groundbreaking procedure, please call Dr. Ed Garrett at 901-747-1262.
