Local and National Law Enforcement Tested in LawFit Challenge

Over a hundred police officers and sheriff's deputies from around the country are in Olive Branch for the National LawFit Challenge.
OLIVE BRANCH, MS (localmemphis.com) - How fit are you? That's a question many of us might be embarrassed to answer. This week, those who pledge to protect and serve are putting themselves to the test.

Over a hundred police officers and sheriff's deputies from around the country are in Olive Branch for the National LawFit Challenge.

"We've got a minute of timed sit ups and pull ups. You do as many as you can," says patrol officer Marvin Vaughan with the University Police Department at Ole Miss.

"The competition this year is great," says Detective Jennifer Owens with the Roanoke Police Department in Roanoke, Virginia. "I think we have 14 females and we're all right neck and neck."

It's Detective Owens fourth year competing. She and her teammates drove all the way from Roanoke. "It took us about ten hours to get here."

"We have people from Virginia Beach, all over Mississippi, Alabama, Texas," says patrol officer Carlos Wilson with the Olive Branch Police Department, host of the LawFit Challenge.

"It's very competitive," Wilson says. "I didn't know this was going to be this competitive."

"We've been training hard for the last couple months," says Vaughan. His department brought a four man team.

The challenges they're doing are all part of the fitness test every officer must pass to get a job.

"It's the exact same thing. Not much is brand new to us," Vaughan says. "It's just about maintaining once you go through the academy."

"I just graduated from the academy in September," says Wilson. "I'm eight months out of the academy. You know eight months means a lot in the patrol car."

"Being in law enforcement and doing what we do, being fit helps you with your job," says Vaughan.

"It's a very important part of the job," agrees Owens. "It could be the difference between life and death."
