MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - The driver of a MATAplus bus was killed Tuesday morning in an accident involving a cement truck on I-240 in midtown Memphis.

The accident happened just after 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, in the southbound lanes of I-240 at South Parkway. The driver of the MATA bus was ejected and trapped under another vehicle; emergency responders pronounced her dead on the scene. MATA later identified the driver as Chantel Sanders.

The cement truck also overturned in the accident. Its driver was transported to The MED in critical condition.

Investigators say the cement truck was merging onto southbound I-240 from the South Parkway ramp when it flipped on its side and collided with the MATA bus. The bus then hit a concrete embankment and Sanders lost control.

Chantel Sanders had been with MATA since 2005, and drove the smaller MATAplus buses that provided service to customers with disabilities. She leaves behind two sons, a grandchild and her mother.

"We express our deepest condolences to her family and close friends, and ask all Memphians to please keep them in their thoughts and prayers," said William Hudson, MATA president and general manager.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton also stated, "Our hearts go out to the family of Memphis Area Transit Authority employee, Chantel Sanders, who was killed in a tragic accident earlier today while performing her duties as a bus driver. In particular, her loss is felt deeply by her colleagues at MATA, her fellow city employees, and all of those who share in the sacrifice associated with serving the public. We honor her memory and ask that you would pray for her family."
