MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - After a boozy night on Beale Street, a Memphis Police officer is now at the center of a sexual assault investigation.

"That's scary, because the police are supposed to protect you," said Brittany, a 21-year-old visiting Memphis from out of town.

According to MPD, officers received a call around noon on Sunday. A woman reported she may have been a victim of a sexual assault. She told investigators that she was out on Beale Street early Sunday morning when she ran into a police officer who she described as an acquaintance. The woman told Police she then left alone to go home.

"The victim advised that she did recall texting and speaking with the suspect after leaving Beale, but she did not recall telling him where she lived," a Memphis Police spokeswoman wrote Monday afternoon. "The victim advised that she was intoxicated and did not remember everything, but she was able to recall that the suspect possibly sexually assaulted her."

"We see a number of these incidents that in fact are preventable," said Susanna Parkinson, who works with victims of sexual assault.

Parkinson estimates alcohol is a factor in 50 percent of the cases worked in the Mid-South.

"The fact is the number one drug used to facilitate sexual assaults is alcohol," she said. "Very often victims are sort of self drugging themselves and placing themselves at risk when they drink to excess for sexual violence."

According to police, the officer is assigned to the Downtown Station, Entertainment District Unit, the very officers that patrol Beale Street.

"The officer has been relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation," a spokeswoman said. "No charges have been filed at this point."

Why hasn't there been any more follow-up on this story? I know they collected evidence. Is it because it was later found out that it was consentual? I've heard that you can really give consent if drunk. Please update. THANKS!

pkt2313 ...you act as if this is Kobe Bryant or someone....what exactly could she or what would she want out of the minimum waged paid Memphis police officer????? A few pulled tickets!??? Get real and get your head checked the word rape is obviously not a well known vocabulary word In your book...if it were you would not have the audicty to comment or make some ignorant statement about her level of intoxication. rape is rape. The only sad part is that she was too intoxicated to physically apprehend a Trained Memphis Police Officer. or maybe its the fact that AS A POLICE OFFICER ...he understood that legally she could not give consent. OH YEA LETS NOT STRAY AWAY FROM THE SMOKING GUN......HE USED HIS POLICE AUTHORITY TO HIS ADVANTAGE BY FINDING HER ADDRESS.

I would hate to think that evil is free to be done to anyone simply because they have had too much to drink. If she met him at the bar then he could have influenced her to drink more or possible even drug her. You know what they say "cops have the best dope".

they suspended this guy because of THIS, what a crock of crap. that goes to show the higher ups and internal affairs believe everyone before MPD officers. this girl was drunk, had sex with the guy and now screams rape, or maybe, just maybe she was sexually assaulted, because she cannot remember because she was DRUNK. uh huh, get BALLIN, he is the only one who will handle it, maybe... from now on, she needs to stay sober
