MPD: Child Killed in Accidental Shooting

A young child is dead after what Memphis police say appears to be an accidental shooting.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A young child is dead after what Memphis police say appears to be an accidental shooting.

Officers were called to a home on the 3200-block of Coleman Ave. around 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, December 25, and found 10-year old Alfreddie Gipson with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The child was transported to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in extremely critical condition but died a short time later.

"Nice kid, he would ride his bike all around," said Harold Stewart, who lives next-door to Gipson. "It is sad to me that it happened."

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and his 12-year-old brother were playing with an unsecured handgun when the gun went off, striking the victim.
"We didn't even hear it, we were sitting the house but we didn't hear it, next thing I know we see police running across the yard." said Stewart.

Investigators were told the gun was unsecured in one of the bedrooms of the home. An adult family member was present during the shooting, but was unaware that the children had discovered the gun.

"It is sad, and today is Christmas, it is sad, and he is a baby," said Brenda Stewart.

The information was presented to the Attorney General's Office at which time it was determined that no criminal charges will be filed at this point. This incident is being handled by MPD's Homicide Bureau as an accidental shooting. The 12-year-old brother has been released to family members.
