MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong says his department will start going over security plans for big events immediately. Very busy days are ahead with Memphis in May right around the corner.

Boston was my city. I was born there and raised there. The pictures of the bombs exploding and injured people tear at the souls of not just Boston natives, but everybody.

Memphis is now my city. There are plenty of outside events coming in the next month or so, and that means sleepless nights for Director Armstrong.

"We really don't like outside events," he said. "It's much easier for us to control everything in relation to events that are inside."

Over the next several weeks in Memphis there will be the Africa in April event, the Beale Street Music Festival, the Memphis in May Barbecue Cooking Contest and the Sunset Symphony. Tens of thousands of people will have attended at least one of these events when everything is said and done.

Armstrong stated, "We will be looking at our plans to see if there are some areas we can improve. The problem that you have is some of these areas are so massive with so many people, that they're very difficult to cover each and every thing associated with those events."

Director Armstrong says he's satisfied with how his department handles the big events, but it's those pictures of the Boston Marathon that are seared in his mind. Cops in Boston probably thought there were ready for anything as well.

"God forbid something like this happens - and I hope I never have to prove that we're ready, but I think we're more than ready."

There were 400 police in downtown Memphis for the Ku Klux Klan march last month. Every event is different, says Armstrong, so every event and plans will be reviewed.
