MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - It only took a jury 20 minutes to find a man Memphis guilty of raping his own granddaughter and knowingly exposing her to HIV.
63-year-old Robert Brown, Sr. was found guilty on charges of child rape and criminal exposure to HIV. Testimony revealed that Brown had repeatedly raped his granddaughter over a two year period at his north Memphis home.
The abuse came to light when the victim grandmother took the girl to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital for genital pain. An examination revealed trauma to her private area and Memphis police launched a criminal investigation.
Brown admitted to investigators that he had sexual contact with his granddaughter starting in June 2009, one year after he was diagnosed with HIV.
Robert Brown, Sr. faces up to 40 years in prison; his sentencing hearing is scheduled for July 27.
