MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - An East Memphis man opened fire on police officers Monday night, after police responded to a report the man had fired more than 20 shots inside his home.

"I initially heard one shot," said Quentin Spivey, who lives nearby.

Officers responded to a 911 hang-up call on the 5000-block of Parkside Avenue around 6 p.m. As they headed to the scene, they were advised that a person with possible mental issues lived at the address.

"He was fine yesterday, yeah, he was 100 percent, he has always been good," said David Hill. "I've never seen him in a foul mood or anything."

When officers arrived, a man hiding in the bushes started firing at officers. They returned fire, hitting the suspect. The man died at the scene.

"I heard a loud pop, then an exchange like a couple of different calibers going off, and then a bunch more, then one more louder, more powerful round," said Andy Rooker, who said he knew the man.

"If this is starting to happen in our neighborhood, are we going to have to worry about what time of night we come out and take an evening stroll? It's scary," said Audrey Pishal as she walked in the neighborhood.

Late Monday, a neighbor said she witnessed the whole thing. The woman said she was outside when she saw the man crouch behind his pick-up truck as police approached. She said she then watched her neighbor start shooting at officers before he was hit.

The woman said her neighbor suffered from bleeding ulcers and didn't usually drink, but had been drinking on Monday. She said she could hear the man arguing with his mom, who lives in the house.

The woman got out safely, and was escorted from the scene by an officer.

"It is not cool man. You got families around here. You got elderly people," Spivey said. "It is probably scaring them. It's not cool."

The man's identity had not been released Monday night.
