BETHEL SPRINGS, TN (abc24.com) - People across the Mid-South are cleaning up after Tuesday night's severe weather. One of the hardest hit areas was McNairy County. Neighbors there say they are counting their blessings because things could have been a lot worse.

Dottie King was watching TV around 1:30 Wednesday morning when her daughter called with scary news, warning her that there was a tornado coming towards her house.

At first King didn't believe her, but the sounds outside quickly changed her mind.

"I heard the wind…a roar," she said, "everything just went flying."

Many of the Kings' vehicles and their business property in bethel springs was destroyed.

One of the areas hit the hardest in McNairy County was a neighborhood on Buena Vista Road in Bethel Springs.

Resident Larry Clayton said, "It's like a bomb went off."

Clayton says witnessing what Mother Nature can do helps put things in perspective.

"It's kind of a humbling feeling, you know the power that's in the wind; it's amazing."

McNairy County Schools will be closed Thursday, January 31, because of storm cleanup in the area. Also, Bethel Springs Elementary will be closed for the rest of the week because of roof and water damage.
