NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - A proposal to legalize medical marijuana is advancing in the state House.

The House Health Subcommittee approved the measure on a voice vote on Tuesday after similar measures had quickly failed in previous years.

Democratic Rep. Jeanne Richardson of Memphis, the bill's main sponsor, said the measure would create the toughest access standards among the states that have enacted similar laws.

In Richardson's words: "Medical cannabis is no longer a radical idea - this is not Cheech and Chong with a bong."

Republican Rep. Joey Hensley, a Hohenwald physician, raised concerns that doctors aren't trained on how to prescribe marijuana.

The companion bill has yet to be scheduled for a hearing in the Senate Government Operations Committee.

It will pass eventually regardless. Being ahead of our surrounding states will but us at a good advantage. Police spend an incredible amount of time and money trying to enforce laws on the people that consider this the safest medicine in the world. As a business owner, I know that Pot smokers never miss work due to a hangover. Sorry but keeping it illegal only makes drug dealers from Mexico rich. Those that vote against it are profiting on pills, beer, drugs and god only knows what else...while people suffer and or die without safe access.

The moonshiners are not gonna let this pass, and I'm sure the most of the little towns are making a killing on asset forfeiture from small time users and sellers.
