MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Dozens of military families and veterans attended the Memorial Day service at Memphis National Cemetery, honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"I have been in wars and I've been over there and over seas and I've been on land. So this is a day of gratitude for me," said Veteran Eddie Murphy.

The event included a flag-raising, gun salute and taps, plus a placing of wreaths for unknown soldiers.

"In honoring our nation's veterans who have served this great nation and have even given their lives in each defense or have served and have since past away."

Nearly 50,000 veterans are buried at this cemetery.

"Everything that we enjoy, there's somebody in one of these graves. And even more tragically there are men who didn't make it back home. The least I can do is come out and spend an hour and let them know that we appreciate it," said Mayor A C Wharton.

"I've had a lot of family who's been in the service. It's a time to stop and reflect," said Linda McKinley.

Veteran Eddie Spencer served in the Army and fought in World War II. His father fought in World War I. He says nothing could stop him from attending the Memorial Day service.

"I come every year and never miss. I have been coming every year. I still wear my uniform because I'm the same size as I was back then," said Spencer.

84-year-old Frank Nobel served 20 years in the Navy. James Finney, almost 25. He says it feels good to know how much the nation cares.

"Great that's what we need today. We need support. We need support because of where the nation is going and this revitalizes everything. That's what I like about it," said veteran Finney.

This annual event was filled with thanks for those who've served and sacrificed.
