MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Get your credit cards from Southwest to show them your love. The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority is pushing folks to apply for Southwest airline's card to show the company they're welcome in the Bluff City.

"In this economy you don't want to get too much credit card debt. Tomorrow is not guaranteed,” said traveler Linda Brown.

"I think it's probably not a good idea,” said another traveler, Besty Ebeoing.

"Yeah, if somebody wants people to get the credit card and they're servicing the area, why not. I think it's a good idea. Support those companies that come into the region, I think it's great,” said traveler Don Hertzog.

Southwest is officially set to come to town in August. The Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority wants people to apply now for Southwest's credit card program and rapid rewards program to "welcome" the company.

"They monitor that in the communities just like any other airline would to identify how much support they have locally; it’s not a requirement to be able to fly,” said Memphis International Airport Executive Vice President Scott Brockman.

In other words, Southwest wants to see how many loyal customers it can get before arriving to Memphis. Brockman says even if people don't apply for the Southwest credit card that doesn't mean the airline won't come to town.

"Southwest would be deterred for the lack of people on planes. Southwest would be encouraged by positive bookings and travel,” said Brockman.

Many travelers didn't seem to care about the credit card program, they just want cheaper flights.
