MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Will property taxes be going up in Memphis or not? If Memphis Mayor A C Wharton has his way they will, to the tune of 47 cents.
Memphis City Council members presented their budgets at City Hall Tuesday and none agree with the Mayor's spending plan.
"We're not interested in a tax increase," Councilman Harold Collins told abc24.com, "I remind the administration since we've been on the Council we've reduced the tax burden on citizens every year. We started at 3.43 now we're at 3.19 and it can potentially go as low as 2.98 or 3.10 or 3.11."
That potential $2.98 property tax rate can be attributed to Councilman Edmund Ford Jr. In his budget proposal, Ford said there will be no layoffs, no cuts to city services and more importantly, no property tax increase.
"Mine is most flexible" Ford said. "At the end of the day a tax rate of $2.98 is what can come out."
The full council will vote on the budget when it meets next Tuesday.
