Memphis City Council Passes Operating Budget

The Memphis City Council finally agreed on an operating budget for the next fiscal year.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - The Memphis City Council finally agreed on an operating budget for the next fiscal year.

The budget plan sets next year's property tax rate at $3.40, which would amount to a tax bill of about $850 for a $100,000 home.

The plan also restores the 4.6 percent pay city employees lost as a temporary means to balance the budget two years ago. Council members did approve 50 city layoffs, down from 100 in a failed version of the budget.

However the Memphis Police Department will see a 2.5 percent cut to its funding. According to the city's Chief Administrative Officer, that amounts to approximately $6 million.

Other budget items included the addition of 10 more code enforcement officers, and restored funding to community centers.
