MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Memphis Mayor AC Wharton said because of a $5.5 million surplus, the city plans to give each city employee a bonus of no less than $600.
City Council Chairman Myron Lowery told abc24.com, "Our city employees deserve more than they're getting; this is just a drop in the bucket to say thank you for doing a good job."
Memphis Police Association Vice-President Michael Williams said he was "a little beguiled" when he heard of the Mayor's plan to give bonuses. "Where is the money coming from if we are supposed to be broke?" he asked.
Williams said that money could be spent other ways, like fattening the pension fund or restoring the 4.6% pay cut city workers have had to endure.
