Memphis CrimeStoppers Hotline Out of Service

The Memphis & Shelby County CrimeStoppers hotline is down and it's been down for days.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Got a tip to solve a crime? Good luck trying to report it. The Memphis & Shelby County CrimeStoppers hotline is down and it's been down for days.

People tell us they've tried calling to report a tip but say no one picks up. I had the same problem. I called 528-CASH and the phone rang more than 25 times. Then my call was disconnected after 3 minutes. If I had an important tip to crack a case, I couldn't even leave a voicemail.

We all know the number to CrimeStoppers, 901-528-CASH. It's a vital tool in fighting and solving crime. People can call anonymously to report crimes, and there is even cash reward in some cases. But what do you do when you can't get through?

"What would be the point of having CrimeStoppers if you can't get in touch with anyone?" asked Memphis resident Burnie Moore.

It's happened to folks Stevie Moore knows.

"He called me and of course we answered," said Stevie Moore. "We only have one line, we probably can't answer every call but I will get back to every call."

Moore is the founder of the anti-violence group called Freedom From Unnecessary Negatives, or F.F.U.N. He started a hotline less than 2 weeks ago. He says people can't get through CrimeStoppers to report a crime so they're calling him.

"I tell the people I'm going to report it and then I'm going to follow up," Moore stated. "That's all I can really offer, no rewards, no money, no goodies, just good neighbors concerned about other good neighbors."

Residents couldn't believe the hotline was down and for this long.

"Wow that doesn't make you feel safe at all or to try to find a way to help solve some crimes, that doesn't help. What's the purpose?" said Burnie Moore.

"I don't know what we need to do," said another Memphis resident, Wayne Rooks. "We need that and it doesn't need to be jammed."

Stevie Moore's hotline has a voicemail set up. He doesn't want to compete with CrimeStoppers, rather work together to stop crime.

"I want to see my children stop dying at the rate that they're dying," he stated. "To hear that there were only 3 homicides last week, 'Stop the Killing' week, I feel pretty good about that."

Memphis Police later issued this statement: "The main CrimeStoppers phone line at 901-528-CASH (2274) began malfunctioning late this past weekend. Technicians have been working diligently over the past two days to restore service. Additional notifications will be made when repairs are complete.

In the meantime, citizens with access to computers or smart phones can still submit tips anonymously through the CrimeStoppers website at http://www.528cash.org or by texting the keyword ‘AWARD’ to 274637 (CRIMES).

Otherwise, citizens are asked to periodically call 901-528-CASH and submit tip information when service to phone lines are restored.

As a reminder, emergency calls for police service should be routed to 911. 901-528-CASH should never be used for such emergencies.

We apologize for any inconvenience. At this time an estimated time of repair cannot be given."
