A return trip from the laundromat took a tragic turn for a Memphis family, after a mom accidentally ran over her 1-year-old son.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A return trip from the laundromat took a tragic turn for a Memphis family, after a mom accidentally ran over her 1-year-old son.

"The baby had fell out the window, the lady had jumped out the car to get it, but the lady that was driving she kept driving," said Anthony Burks, 10, who witnessed the accident.

It happened just after 10:30 p.m. Wednesday night in the parking lot of the Brothers Food Market on the 2100 block of Alcy. According to a police report, Chernika Mangum, 32, was backing out of a parking spot when her son Rashad fell out of the SUV.

Surveillance video from the market shows the rear driver's door opening and Rashad falling out.

"After that she ran over the baby's head. She came back and ran through them like a speed bump," Banks said.

Linda Williams, Rashad's grandma, said she's been praying for her grandson.

"I am praying about it, it is scary, but it is going to be alright," she said.

Mangum says she normally has child safety seats in the car, but had removed them to make room for clean clothes as she returned from washing them.

Police reports indicate there were three other children in the car, ranging in age between one and 11.

"None of the children were in child seats at the time of the incident," the report states.

According to Mangum, Rashad was rushed to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. He remained there Thursday evening. His mom said according to doctors, Rashad will be ok, but faces a long road to recovery. Mangum estimated her son would be in the hospital at least a week.
