MEMPHIS, TN-Lights, camera, action. A new HBO/Cinemax show will soon be filmed in the Mid South.
“Quarry begins 13 days of filming in Memphis and Horn Lake, Mississippi at the end of July. Memphis usually gets skipped over when it comes to Hollywood projects being shot in the Bluff City.
"I think it's great when movies are shot in Memphis and in the Memphis area because we have so much to offer,” said Andy Dean.
"Quarry" is an upcoming HBO/Cinemax show that will be filmed in Memphis and in the Horn Lake Mississippi area starting July 22nd. This is a huge get for the Mid-South, as the bluff city is often left off major production locations. Memphis usually gets passed over by Hollywood, leaving many budding film stars and makers wondering why. Andy Dean, owner & producer of Dean HD.com says incentives are the issue.
"Within the state of Mississippi they have a 20 million dollar annual recurring fund that goes into incentivizing movies whereas in Tennessee we only have 2 million guaranteed per year. So it's hard to compete with those numbers," said Andy Dean.
Dean also believes that projects filmed in Memphis would boost the city's economy and open up more jobs. He says the state needs film incentive revision and says it starts with the legislature.
"And unfortunately the legislature is based in Nashville and as is the TV show Nashville. Ya know that's gotten a lot of the money from the state with money we didn't even really have. I mean we had an annual budget of 2 million dollars but of course they came out with an additional amount to be able to incentivize TV show Nashville which is great for Tennessee but it really doesn't do a whole lot for the Memphis market, said Andy Dean.
