MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - When will the killing end? One person was found dead in the middle of the street. Now a teen is fighting for his life and neighbors are too scared to talk.
"I just heard a bunch of gunshots. (How many gunshots did you hear?) 12 or 15. Something like that. I come outside and see my little buddy laying in the street," said Shannon Hammock.
Hammock says he was surprised to see his 13-year-old neighbor Minez lying in the street bleeding from a gun shot wound. Nearby, another victim was found dead lying in the street. Police are treating this case as a homicide. People in the neighborhood are afraid for their safety.
"We got a snitch because in the city, black communities that it's like its a bad word to snitch," said Stevie Moore, a community activist against gun violence.
One neighbor requested not to be on camera. She's lived on Bluff Wood for 19 years and says nothing like this has ever happened.
"He was shot three times. I think in the head, neck, and chest. It all started from that house where you see that police car sitting at."
The house was surrounded by crime scene tape with police standing guard. What appears to be gang-related graffiti is sprayed on a fence. Virtually no one who lives in the neighborhood was willing to speak on camera.
"It's not that nobody saw anything. They don't trust the authorities to tell anything because they think they've got to be ready to be retaliated against," said Moore.
Moore believes there is a disconnect between the police and the community. He wants the two to come together to protect the community.
