MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A Memphis police officer was arrested for DUI after a car accident in the Raleigh area Sunday morning.

The accident occurred at Ramill Road and Yale Road around 9:45 a.m. on Sunday, July 22. Investigators say a 2004 Saab 92, driven by off-duty officer David Royal, rear-ended a 2008 Nissan Maxima, causing minor damage and injuries.

Responding officers noticed the smell of alcohol on Royal, and stated he was unsteady on his feet. David Royal, 43, was arrested and charged with DUI, Public Intoxication, Reckless Driving, Financial Responsibility and Refusal to Submit to a BAC Test.

Royal has been with the Memphis Police Department since 1995. He is assigned to the Organized Crime Unit, where he has been relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

A badge is not a 'free pass' to do whatever you want to do. He should face harsher penalties than a non-LEO.
