MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Wednesday marks the first day of Kwanzaa. The week-long celebration honors African heritage.
It recognizes core principles, which include unity, self-determination, responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
Memphis Kwanzaa International in Whitehaven is busy getting ready for the first night of festivities, which focuses on unity.
According to Dr. Kaia Naantaanbuu-Jones, President of Memphis Kwanzaa International, "We will have spoken word, dancing, spoken word poetry as well as entertainment for tonight."
Wednesday night's Kwanzaa celebration begins at 6 p.m. at the Memphis Kwanzaa International building located at 1539 Elvis Presley Blvd.
Kwanzaa was first celebrated in the U.S. in 1966.
