Memphis Pulled Pork Nominated as "Best Iconic American Food"

Juicy, delicious pulled pork is a favorite among Memphians, and now it's in the running for USA Today's "Best Iconic American Food."
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - For all you Memphis barbecue connoisseurs, it should be no surprise that the city's pulled pork has risen to the top once again as one of the top "20 Best Iconic American Foods."

Memphian Reginald Massey said, "Our barbecue is the best in the Mid-South, in the world."

It's definitely world renowned, and it's close to being voted number one in a USA Today competition.

"Memphis is famous for doing it right and doing it here and the festival, you know, I kind of miss it, miss the smell and the haze that goes over the city when you have the barbecue fest," said Memphian Mike Harrison.

The Bluff City's popular pulled pork is officially in the top 20 nominees, but now it's left to voters to decide.

Self-proclaimed barbeque man Alex Walls says he knows the secret that puts folks into a glorious frenzy when they taste the pulled pork in Memphis.

"I think it's the smoke and the time you cook it, and the heat. It's just a bunch of tricks I've picked up being in a barbecue family," said Walls.

Memphis's pulled pork is facing some tough competitors that include Baltimore's crabs, Charleston's shrimp and grits, and New Orleans' crawfish. In the final stretch, Memphians know who the clear winner is.

"I mean it's Memphis! We have the best barbecue here and you know it doesn't surprise me at all," said Massey.

Also on the list is Southern Fried Chicken from Atlanta, and Key Lime pie from Key West.
