Memphis Runs to Support Boston

As Boston crowds cheered the capture of the second bombing suspect, runners in Memphis honored the victims.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - As Boston crowds cheered the capture of the second bombing suspect, runners in Memphis honored the victims. More than 300 people pounded the pavement in a show of solidarity as the drama in Boston unfolded.

The run started around 6 p.m. at Overton Park. The turnout was so great, organizers sold out of t-shirts that say "Run for Boston." All the proceeds will go directly to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

"We want to run together tonight as a show of solidarity, that's why we're here,” said Barry Roberson, owner of Breakaway Memphis and organizer of the run.

People ran or walked 2.62 miles to honor the victims of the Boston marathon bombings.

"Breakaway Running is an amazing organization and they put this together so quickly and we really appreciate their support,” said Boston Marathon runner, Jennie Silk of Memphis.

Silk has run in the Boston marathon for the past 4 years. She crossed the finish line 45 minutes after the bombs went off. Even though she's home, she can't stop thinking about the people of Boston.

"My brain is on a continuous loop of confusion, realization, terror, anger, and then sadness just over and over again,” said Silk.

Friday night’s support, unity, and love are what Memphians want to show the city of Boston.

"We want to tell people that the runners in the marathon, we love them and we feel their pain,” said Memphis runner Johnnie Blue.

"We have a wonderful, caring, community here in Memphis, Tennessee,” said Roberson.

If you want to support the people of Boston, Slider Inn is holding a benefit concert Friday night located at 2117 Peabody Ave near Cooper.
