MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Nearly 1,000 vehicles have been towed by the city of Memphis since the beginning of 2012 due to the "Boot and Tow" program.

Downtown parking is no joke. The city is getting ready for the next phase of the "Boot and Tow" program.

Memphis plans to start the "boot" part of the program in December. That means if you have three unpaid parking tickets you will get the boot.

The program started in January 2012. It was a way to get people's attention so they'll pay their parking tickets. Parking tickets typically run about $25. On the third unpaid ticket, your car may be towed or even get the boot.

"The focus has been on the top 100 offenders. In this case typically it’s the individuals who owe upwards to at least $500 for parking tickets,” said Memphis Chief Administrative Officer George Little.

There are some tight parking spots in downtown. A few drivers claim they've seen the city use forklifts to move illegally parked cars. Little says the city doesn't use forklifts.

"If a forklift is used at all by the city typically that'll be on the impound lot because we don't have the keys to the car and we have to move the vehicles around to stage and make space,” said Little.

It's more likely your car will get the boot than be towed because it's quicker and cheaper for the city. All you need is three unpaid parking tickets.

So instead of being stiffer on the "real" criminals that are killing, Robbing and raising hell amoung the city, the city is choosing to put more effort into the measly $75-$500 they can get from somebody...all comes down to getting money, not benefitting the city!!

i agree with the last poster regarding handicap spots, he is correct. These fat people do not want to walk and they are especially the ONES who need to walk and walk and walk. Boot them for being so RUDE and LAZY.i also have noticed though some of them do have handicapped tags, which i find odd, maybe you have to weigh over 300 to get one. They also seem to be driving Lexus, big SUVS, big trucks, some vehicles i could not even afford to put the gas in. let's see now, over 300 pounds, handicap tag, sometimes, and big cars, do they work? i doubt it. how do they do it??? hummm, lets think on this one, amazing

Only government can justify stealing tens of thousands of dollars of a person's property for a supposed bill of as little as $75. And only those that think that the government does the right thing, all the time, every time, because they are benevolent and caring, can justify this mistreatment and theft. They do not own you. We outnumber them.

Wonder what would happen if they targeted some of the worst lunch time offenders (who coincidentally are the worst speeders in Memphis as well) the sedans driven by Memphis finest. Side note, did the cop(s) who were outed in the 'top 100 scofflaw' story ever pay their fines like they promised? I'm betting not.

They also need to start booting these fat lard-azzes that park in the handicap zone because they don't want to walk that far to the door.
