MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Private security guards are protecting local apartment complexes and putting their lives on the line.  On Sunday, October 23, 2011, a security guard was shot and killed in Whitehaven, the latest in a series of dangers encounters for these guards.

On Monday, Memphis Police said they were interviewing a person of interest in the shooting at the Bent Tree Apartment that claimed the life of a 41-year-old security guard, Reginald Thompson.

Derrick Hoffman knows first hand about the dangers. He runs Memphis Protection Agency, which patrols complexes similar to the Bent Tree.

"In this line of work," says Hoffman, "we are the front face of all these apartment complexes. They are at full occupancy. We get shot at on a regular basis. This is an extended amount of danger. It is very extensive. We don't know what we are walking into every day."

Hoffman and many of his fellow guards wear bullet-proof vests, carry loaded guns and handcuffs.

"It is getting worse," says Don Lewis at Pro-Tech Security, Inc. "It is getting worse everyday.  We put out about 200 people every day, and they've noticed a change in the violence."

Yes, unlike Police and Sheriff Deputies...Security Officers are the POLICE on the property that they are PROTECTING, however that doesn't mean that they have the right to engage in high speed chases or shootouts. Since most security officers are Military, Retired LEO or current officers, they're pretty much updated on their training, i,e. Taser, firearms. batons, chemical agent, etc...Again depending upon that state's public safety division on what you can and can't do as a Private Police /Security Officer. Some security officers put that uniform on and automatically be "HE MAN" just like sworn officers you have to talk to people with RESPECT....people don't give a damn about any stinky badges..Its just a extra income, you're not going to change the WORLD. Everyone owns a gun these days and won't think twice about SHOOTING you.

I think both posters are right. Security Officers do uphold the law, even if it is mostly to protect the property owner. Granted they do not have any more law authority than you or I, but in their own way they are 'protecting'. But because they wear a uniform, and some are armed, it does make them more a target for criminals.

TOMMY - Security officers are not 'sworn to uphold the law.' They are hired by the property owner to protect property, and to attempt to establish a safe environment for the tenants so the tenants have an incentive to stay in a safe apartment complex. And if the po-lice are 'sworn to uphold the law', they more often than not fail miserably, because very few of them even remember their oath....

Now you know if these thugs don't respect our police, no way they are going to respect or think twice about killing a "Security Officer." On the other hand I think they should consider the same punishment for killing a security officer as they do for killing a police officer since they are both sworn to up hold the law. All these thugs are doing is making it a lot more unsafe for themselves when approached by a police officer now, because our officers are a lot more likely to "shoot first" if they even think their life may be in danger, and I don't blame them. I'd rather see one more thug off the street than see an officer lose his or her life for not being careful enough when dealing with these thugs. We have to turn this thing around if we ever expect our streets to be safe again, especially here in Memphis. Now please don't reply by saying that Memphis is not the only one with this problem, I am very much aware of that; but I live in Memphis, so let's start here and maybe the rest of the areas will pick up on what we are doing (let's lead this time).
