DESOTO COUNTY, MS (abc24.com) - It's been two days since the election and there are two Mississippi politicians who still aren't sure who won. A run-off will be held in the race for one of DeSoto County's state Senate seats, but voters won't know who is on the ballot until next week.

District 19 includes Southaven and Olive Branch. Four candidates ran against each other. David Parker is moving on to the run-off in two weeks, but who he's campaigning against isn't clear.

Everyone who voted in DeSoto County - all 60,000 ballots - have to be personally scanned and cleared this week.

"It takes us a good couple days to scan 60-thousand people in system from poll books," says Election Commissioner Danny Klein.

Once the regular votes are checked, election commissioners move on to the absentee and provisional ballots. Those ballots are what the race for State Senate District 19 hinges on.

Right now 251 votes separate Pat Nelson from Kevin Blackwell, with Nelson in the lead.
There are about 1,400 ballots left to be counted before a winner is declared.

"Statistically, it's pretty much going to track the way the original ballots did," Blackwell asserts, saying he'd be surprised if it's different. "You never know where they're pulling these ballots from, which precinct."

Nelson adds, "Rarely do provisional ballots differ from what people voted in the election. It would take a tremendous percentage going to Mr. Blackwell, and I think we're OK."

"It's one of those things you never can tell," says Klein. "I really couldn't speculate. It's a possibility it could change."

By law, the election commission has until next Friday, November 16 to certify the results, but they expect to know by Monday.

The runoff will be November 27th.
