More Ballot Errors Discovered in Shelby County

There are new reports of ballot errors over the weekend, with one election commissioner telling abc24.com the number of incorrect ballots could soar into the thousands.
MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Early voting is over, but the problems at the polls continue in Shelby County.

There are new reports of ballot errors over the weekend, with one election commissioner telling abc24.com the number of incorrect ballots could soar into the thousands. The commissioner added the number of people receiving incorrect ballots could eventually top 3,000.

Laura Smith is 96-years-old, and one of those thousands to receive a wrong ballot. She says two races were left off of her absentee ballot.

"It is awful, it is terrible," Smith said.

Smith says she's been voting for more than 70 years, and doesn't remember anything like this.

"It is terrible, I didn't know they could just go and move everything they want to move," she said. "Why are they having this thing and other people are just doing what they want to do."

Smith discovered the omission too late to receive another absentee ballot, so she'll have to head to the polls on Election Day.

"I am going to vote anyway, if I have to vote on another one," Smith said. "All I have to do is get there."

On Monday evening, Shelby County Election Commissioner George Monger told abc24.com that commissioners are working on a plan to ensure Election Day goes smoothly. Monger said the commission hoped to release the plan sometime Tuesday.

It's a plan too late to help Smith, but sure to help others after an early-voting period with plenty of problems.
